Dear Sir/Madam,
ZAKAT WELFARE ASSISTANCE FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE ROHINGYA COMMUNITY MEMBERS
Assalamualaikum wr. wb. & Ramadhan Greetings!
1. The month of Ramadan al-Mubarak is a much awaited occasion for Muslims throughout the world. In this blessed month, besides exercising self-restraint from the break of day to sunset, Muslims are also obliged to increase their works of charity as a means of attracting divine blessings. As for Muslims and the Faithful who have been blessed with prosperity and riches, Ramadan presents a golden opportunity for cleansing their earnings and purifying their wealth, besides also offering their gratitude and thanks to the Almighty Allah for having endowed them with the means of sustenance. To the destitute, Ramadan is the time for them to share in the blessings.
2. The decision to redistribute zakat wealth in our country has seldom taken into account the welfare of the Rohingya community in our midst. Many of our fellow Muslims as well as welfare organizations in our land of plenty, as well as in other parts of the Muslim world are not aware of the sufferings and privations endured by the Rohingya community in Malaysia which is estimated at 20,000 – 30,000 people; some 650,000 refugees live under conditions of dire poverty in the refugee camps of the Cox Bazaar district in Bangladesh; while about 5 million refuges, mostly comprising women and the elderly, continue to live in Arakan, Myanmar. The military junta continues to persecute them in the land of their origin, and the pathetic story of their lives grips the heart of the Faithful amongst God’s servants.
3. It is in the spirit of Ramadan al-Mubarak that the Rohingya Council of Ulamas (MUR) wishes to make this appeal to your sense of compassion. You are most fortunate to be born in this blessed land of plenty, and as a sign of your gratitude to God, we hope that you will consider extending the scope of your donations to also include members of the Rohingya community, both in Malaysia as well as other parts of Asia as mentioned above.
4. We hope to be able to use a part of your donations for the schooling of Rohingya children who have been denied formal education. The MUR leadership has taken upon itself the responsibility for educating these children who are found to be deprived physically, mentally and spiritually. They continue to remain ignorant of the ways of the world, and the contributions should help towards ensuring that these children would be adequately enlightened with such knowledge, faith and understanding as will enable them to be useful members of society, and independent of all else save Allah s.w.t.
5. We hope that the holy month of Ramadan will open the hearts of every true believer who has been given the means and blessings by God to contribute whole heartedly towards overcoming the evil of absolute poverty gripping the lives of the Rohingya community in Malaysia and other parts of Asia, including their native Arakan.
6. May the outpourings of Allah’s boundless grace and beneficence be upon all those who would step forward to help bring relief and succor to the children, women and other deprived members of the Rohingya community.
