Apart from operating the madrasahs system of education, MUR would like to take this opportunity to thank Wadah Pencerdasan Umat (WADAH) and Future Global Network (FGN) in the establishment of the Rohingya Education Centre (REC) in Permatang Pauh, Pulau Pinang. At REC, students are being taught Bahasa Melayu, English, Matematics, Science, Moral Studies and Civics in accordance with the national education curriculum (KBSR).
The number of students as at March 2011 stand at 115. All of them are from the Rohingya community living in the environs of Bagan Dalam, Bagan Ajam, Bukit Mertajam, Seberang Jaya and Perai.
The Rohingya Education Centre, which is managed by Wadah Pencerdasan Umat (WADAH) with the cooperation of Future Global Network (FGN) receives funding from UNHCR.
The success of REC in imbibing quality education to the Rohingya children in Permatang Pauh has given the hope for further expansion of education facilities in other Rohingya settlement areas in the country. MUR hopes that WADAH and FGN as well as other NGOs will work together with UNHCR towards realizing this noble objective. The future of the Rohingya children is totally dependant on such initiatives, and we hope that besides a mere handful of NGOs, MUR will also enlist the assistance of the Malaysian and other governments, private sectors and concerned citizens in helping to realize the dreams and aspirations of the poverty stricken and helpless members of the Rohingya community.
