As the duty of a religious person (mualim), MUR with the cooperation from the Rohingya community leaders and financially aided by zakat contributions channelled through the various Islamic NGOs such as Future Global Network Foundation (FGN) are involved in providing religious education for the children of the Rohingya community through madrasahs located in Rohingya settlement areas throughout the Peninsula especially in the Klang Valley and the State of Penang. Since 2005 the following madrasahs have received financial assistance :-
(i) Federal Territory (Ipoh Road, Cheras Baru)
(ii) Selangor (Meru, Kapar, and Warta Baru (Selayang)
(iii) Penang (Bagan Dalam, Bagan Lebuh Tahir)
Jalan Baru (Bukit Mertajam), Taman Senangin (Perai)
and Ujung Batu (Butterworth)
At the above madrasahs the children (both male and female) within the age group of 6 – 14 years imbibed religious instructions on the Quran and the Fardu Ain. Besides religious education some of the madrasahs are able to provide education in various other subjects including science and mathematics as well as English and Bahasa Melayu. The expansion of education to include non-religious subjects is contingent on the availability of funds and teaching staff. At the end of the day, even if the Rohingya children might not have received the benefit of a formal education, they would have at least acquired some basic skills involving reading, writing and arithmatic (3R).
